My aunt owned a paint store in 1959 when I was 10 years old. She also sold toys in a special section upstairs and my sister and I looked forward every year to visiting her shop and picking out things we wanted to put on our Christmas list. My birthday is in November, and the year I turned 10, she gave me one of the first Mattel Barbies made in Japan. I thought Barbie wasn’t very pretty, but I loved her clothes. She is long gone, but her outfits are alive and in excellent condition, as I became obsessed with her clothes. I would not let anyone touch my Barbie, and on every Birthday and Christmas until I became a teen, all I asked for were Barbie outfits. She had more clothes than I ever dreamed of having. Now I am 73 years old and have 2 beautiful granddaughters and 7 great nieces who love Barbie too. I would love to leave this cherished collection to my granddaughters or a great nieces, but none of them would ever value these items as I did. They would end up lost, tossed aside or in the trash. So, as much as it breaks my heart to sell these items, I feel selling them can benefit my education in the future. A few pieces were missing, like an earring or glove, but replaced by me.
