Vintage, rare Bild Lilli Doll from 1955Rare--only 130,000 made between 1955-64West German Fashion Doll by Greiner & HausserBased on BILD tabloid newspaper comic strip by Reinhard BeuthienDates of production 1955-64Lilli was not created for children, but was a gag gift for men sold in cigar shops, bars, etc. Barbie was based on Lilli doll. Lilli is sometimes called the "grandmother" of Barbie. Ruth Handler found the doll on a trip to Germany and brought her to Mattel, which eventually bought the company in 1964 and Lilli production ceased. Made of plastic polystyreneMolded eyelashes, earrings and shoes (not removeable)Hand painted face, unsealedSide glancing eyes, high narrow arched eyebrowsRed full bow lips, red fingernail paint (like Barbie #1 and #2)Limbs attached by rubber bands (explains why she is in four pieces now!)Blonde mohair type hair is in a bun, no forehead curlHoles in each foot/molded shoe (stand, not included) None of the dolls were marked.My mother purchased these dolls when we lived in Germany 1955-57. I was too young for a Lilli doll, but my sister had one so I got one, too. I do not have any clothes or accessories for this doll. When Barbie came along, Lilli was a spectator who got to wear great clothes Condition: Lilli needs restringing. She is currently in 4 pieces: head, torso/arms, 2 legs.
